See You Through My Eyes – The Head and the Heart

A heart-shaped tree standing in between
Human nature, and the nature was seen.
Wouldn’t you know it now?
Life’s got a funny way of showing us how.
I see you standing there, listening in the leaves,
Looking down, shining on me,
Tryna show me how, just takes a while.
You should know this by now.

Until you learn to love yourself,
The door is locked to someone else.
I’m just as damaged as you are,
Scattered to pieces with you gone.
Without the dark, there is no light,
But don’t give the dust an instant night.
I saw the signs you were leaving,
But I didn’t wanna believe it. read more

Galaxy Dry-Hopped Wild Saison

Name: Galaxy Dry-Hopped Wild Saison

Brewery: Upslope Brewing (Boulder, Colorado)

Style: Farmhouse Ale – Saison

Rating: 3.7 / 5

Review: I’m realizing I need to stop reviewing all these middling-rated brews and actually throw in some bad beers or out-of-this-world ones. I don’t know. This one could be bad, depending on who you are.

I got this on tap. Just asking for a taster, I could smell the few ounces of beer from across the bar — and it wasn’t exactly a good smell. The taste was stranger. Why do I want to say I feel like there were hints of ketchup? I truly do not know. But perhaps the strangest thing about this beer is that I really liked it. Maybe it’s so out there, it tasted good just out of novelty. I’m not sure. Go try it yourself. read more

Post-College Friends

Social life really changes once you graduate from college. One moment, you’re surrounded by people all your own age who share the same interests and a common experience. The next, you’re in a workplace surrounded by people who are decades older than you in a town you don’t know. You lose the ease and accessibility of familiar people — just like that.

I recognize that this is not the situation for all college graduates. Certainly I’m not facing such a severe case; I work with people probably all age 25 to 40, in a college town (not my own), with a few contacts in the area. I’m not completely alone. But still, when you’re used to being always around others, it can feel lonesome confronting such a great increase in alone time. read more

Heat of the Summer – Young the Giant

No one can take me out of this mess;
I do it to myself.
I lost my phone, my keys, what else?
The acid doesn’t help,
I’m paranoid as hell, and I wanna
Go home, but there’s no place to run.

Feel like it’s been forever
Since I had my shit together.
I just do what I wanna
In the heat of the summer.
If I could roll up another,
Baby, I could see in technicolor.
I just do what I gotta
In the heat of the summer,
In the heat of the summer.

I’ve got to figure something out,
But I don’t know where to start.
I found my keys under the couch,
But I’m scared of going out,
Having all these doubts, and I’d rather
Stay home ’cause there’s no place to run. read more

The Concept of Knowing

A few weeks ago, I went to see one of my favorite bands of teenager-dom for the fifth time. Yes, the fifth time. No, they didn’t have a new album. No, they weren’t playing with any other acts that I knew. I just wanted to see them again, because after seeing a band repeatedly, I kind of decide that I personally know them.

The funny thing is, I hadn’t actually ever met this band before — usually after seeing a band again and again, I will stay after the show at least once to talk to them. So this time, I was determined. So determined, in fact, that I bought a ticket to the show plus a VIP pass to partake in a Q&A and get my picture with them. Two months in advance. read more

Blueberry Velvet

Name: Blueberry Velvet

Brewery: 4 Noses

Style: Milkshake IPA

Rating: 4.3 / 5

Review: Honestly, I should rate this beer higher, but as my high school English teacher always quoted Robert Browning: “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp — or what’s a heaven for?”

I’ve been a big 4 Noses fan for a while even though they didn’t have an auspicious start with me (didn’t LOVE their Proboscis Simcoe American Pale Ale, and it was the first beer of theirs I’d tried). Luckily, I gave them another chance and I’m so glad that I did. read more
